Awaiting the Cicadas
In the early summer of 2004 we sat in wait of the arrival of Brood X. The night the ground temperature reached 64 degrees, the 17-year cicadas would crawl out of their holes and climb up the trees awaiting the hardening of their exoskeletons. Like the seconds between the
knock at the door and the revelation of the visitor without, we waited and pondered our impending doom from insects we did not understand.

Boundary Lines
Nearly every tree in the city was placed there with human intent. None grew naturally as a result of the seed blowing in the wind. They form lines and grow in square boxes - all neatly within boundaries. What effect does this have on the human psyche?

Moonlit Intarsia
Sand-clock moon;
the night empties out,
the hour is lit.

Pear Tree
Of all our idolic symbols
what is more worthy of worship than a flowering tree?

Summer Solstice
The longest day of the year. The earth burns.

Sylvan Allignment
Standing in line alongside the road,
the trees obediently salute us as we pass.
